Wilmette events are shaped by the lake. Ceremonies drift toward Gillson Park, milestone dinners land in living rooms and back gardens a few blocks off Sheridan Road, and the calendar bunches around graduations, b'nai mitzvah season and the stretch of summer weekends that ends with the July 3 fireworks crowd at Gillson. What those events share is a planning problem that has nothing to do with recipes: narrow residential streets, permitted park spaces with fixed rental windows, and kitchens that were never built to plate for 120 people. Catering by Michaels has been solving that class of problem since 1980 from our Morton Grove kitchen, a short drive from Wilmette.

What We Cater in Wilmette
Full service means the team, the equipment and the tabletop come with the food, not a tray drop.
- Weddings and rehearsal dinners: plated dinners, chef stations, family-style service, passed cocktail hours, late-night additions.
- B'nai mitzvah celebrations: two-track menus that feed a kids' table and an adult reception well at the same time.
- At-home milestone parties: graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, engagement parties, memorials, holiday dinners.
- Corporate and board functions: client receptions, retreats, seated lunches and evening programs for Wilmette offices and home-based hosting.
- Nonprofit and community events: donor receptions, committee dinners and volunteer appreciation gatherings.
If your event is smaller or simpler than that list, our delivery menus cover drop-off catering, and our full-service menus cover everything staffed.
Wilmette Logistics We Plan Around
Lakefront park rentals run on a clock. The Wilmette Park District's Lakeview Center at Gillson Park rents the Lakeview Room for weddings, b'nai mitzvah and holiday parties, with a smaller Gillson Room, and the park district's published rental terms for that space include a minimum rental block. Confirm the current terms with the park district, because load-in, setup, service and strike all have to fit inside the contracted time or the schedule collapses at the back end. Our planners build a minute-level timeline first, then design the menu to match it. Chef stations and passed courses hold a room beautifully in a tight window. A four-course plated meal needs a different staffing ratio to land on time.
Open-air events need a weather plan and a power plan. Wallace Bowl, the open-air amphitheater at Gillson Park, is rented with a deposit, an assigned rain date and two staff included. Outdoor space near Lake Michigan means wind on chafing fuel, humidity on garnishes and no guaranteed indoor fallback unless you contract one. We plan hot service equipment, wind screening and a staged rain protocol as part of the proposal rather than as an afterthought.
Residential events are logistics events. At-home catering commonly runs out of a driveway, a garage or a tent. The planning review should cover access, prep and dish staging, floor and surface protection, and how to keep working areas out of guest sightlines. The equipment plan should be scoped to what the site allows, and the team must confirm whether the kitchen can support the menu.
Other park district spaces widen the options. The park district's rental roster also includes Gillson Park picnic and pavilion permits plus the Community Recreation Center, Centennial Complex and Mallinckrodt Center, which gives daytime and family events lower-cost venue paths than a private hall. Confirm catering and alcohol rules with the park district for the specific space you book, since terms vary by room.
Getting people there. Wilmette is served by the Metra Union Pacific North line and by the CTA Purple Line at the Linden terminal, so downtown guests can arrive without a car. That matters for bar service planning and for the timing of a shuttle or a late-night send-off. The Bahá'í House of Worship on Linden Avenue is a landmark many out-of-town guests will want to see during a wedding weekend, which is worth building into a Saturday morning schedule, though it is a devotional site rather than an event rental space.
Service Styles and How to Choose
- Plated: most formal, best for programs with speeches and a fixed timeline. Highest staffing ratio.
- Buffet: efficient for larger counts and mixed menus. Needs floor space and line management.
- Chef stations: interactive, keeps guests moving, strong in venues with limited seating.
- Family style: warm and generous, good for milestone dinners at long tables.
- Cocktail reception: passed hors d'oeuvres or grazing stations, ideal inside short rental windows.
The right choice usually comes from the room and the clock, not the menu. Our wedding catering, social catering and corporate catering teams each start there.
Menus Built for the Guest List You Actually Have
Menus are custom. Our culinary team builds around the season, the service style and the dietary reality of the room, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-conscious and nut-aware requests, plus traditional Jewish holiday menus for High Holiday and life-cycle events. If your celebration has religious or cultural requirements, tell us during the first call so the menu, service order and staffing are planned around them from the start rather than patched later.
Rentals, Staffing and the Tabletop
Full-service proposals include the culinary team and service staff. Food service ware, china, flatware, glassware and linens are part of the standard full-service picture, while tables, chairs and bar service are handled as separate line items. For Wilmette, the proposal should compare the venue inventory with what the event requires and state which rental items, if any, can be coordinated through partners. Confirm that scope in writing.
A Realistic Wilmette Timeline
- Earliest stage: venue or home layout decided, date held, service style discussed.
- Planning stage: menu tasting direction, rental scope, staffing plan and bar approach.
- Detail stage: final menu, dietary counts, floor plan, timeline.
- Final stage: guaranteed guest count, seating detail, delivery and load-in windows.
- Event week: confirmations with venue or park district, rental drops, staff briefing.
These stages are a general sequence, not a promised booking window. Actual lead times are confirmed by our planners for your date, and no minimum or fixed window is implied here.

FAQs
Do you cater at Wilmette Park District facilities such as the Lakeview Center at Gillson Park?
We can build a proposal for a park district space. Park district rooms set their own catering, insurance and alcohol terms, and the park district publishes a minimum rental block for the Lakeview Center, so we confirm the specific room's rules with you before finalizing a service plan.
Can you cater a wedding in a Wilmette back yard or under a tent?
Residential and tented events may be possible. Confirm equipment, power, staging, service flow, rentals and a weather-appropriate menu in the proposal.
How far is your kitchen from Wilmette?
Our kitchen and offices are at 6203 Park Ave in Morton Grove, a short drive from Wilmette. Being nearby shortens transit and makes planning visits easier.
What happens if it rains during an outdoor Wilmette event?
We build a weather protocol into the plan. Wallace Bowl rentals, for example, are contracted with an assigned rain date, and for private outdoor events we plan tenting or an indoor fallback plus covered hot service.
Can you handle allergies, religious requirements or mixed dietary needs?
Our culinary team builds custom menus around dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-conscious and nut-aware guests, and we prepare traditional Jewish holiday menus. Share the specific religious or dietary requirement on the first call so we can confirm exactly what we can accommodate for your event.
Do you provide staff, china and linens, or only food?
Full-service events include the culinary team and wait staff along with food service ware, china, flatware, glassware and linens. Tables, chairs and bar service are quoted separately.
How many guests can you serve in Wilmette?
We scale from intimate seated dinners to large receptions. Guest count drives staffing, equipment and rentals, so it is the first number we ask for.
