Full-Service Catering in Lake Forest, IL

Lake Forest events are usually held in rooms and grounds that were never designed around a commercial kitchen.

Lake Forest events are usually held in rooms and grounds that were never designed around a commercial kitchen. A historic community hall, a college chapel, a forest preserve shelter, a private home. The food is the visible part. What decides whether the evening runs smoothly is the load-in, the staffing plan and the equipment list behind it.

Catering by Michaels has operated as a full-service Chicago-area caterer since 1980, working out of our production kitchen at 6203 Park Ave in Morton Grove. That means a custom menu, culinary and wait staff on site, service ware and linens, and a team that plans the timeline backward from the moment your guests sit down.

Where Lake Forest Events Actually Happen

Lake Forest hosts run into three broad situations, and each one changes the proposal.

  • Rented civic and cultural rooms. Gorton Center publishes eleven event spaces, including the 309-seat Hughes Theater and the Stuart Community Room used for weddings. Some rooms have been part of a renovation program, so availability and current kitchen access should be confirmed directly with the venue before a date is held.
  • Campus spaces. Lake Forest College's conference and event services list Glen Rowan, Lily Reid Holt Chapel with seating for 210, and Calvin Durand Hall. Campus venues typically carry their own vendor, insurance and access rules, and those rules need to be read before a menu is finalized.
  • Preserve and outdoor rentals. The Lake County Forest Preserves rent event venues across the county, which puts Lake Forest hosts within reach of open-air and rustic settings that require a full mobile kitchen setup.

A note on hotels: some Lake Forest properties, including Deer Path Inn, cater in-house. Ask early whether an outside caterer is permitted, because the answer shapes your venue shortlist.

These venues are described as planning context. We are not stating that Catering by Michaels has catered at any of them or holds approved-caterer status at any of them. Always confirm each venue's catering rules, kitchen access and insurance requirements in writing.

Event Types We Build Menus For

Lake Forest demand skews toward milestone hosting rather than high-volume corporate feeding.

  • Weddings and rehearsal dinners in rented halls, chapels, clubs and private residences
  • Anniversary and birthday dinners where a plated or family-style meal fits the room better than a buffet line
  • B'nai mitzvah celebrations with a separate adult menu and kids' service running on its own timeline
  • Graduation parties around the late-spring calendar, often outdoors and often paired with tent rentals
  • Nonprofit receptions and board dinners in cultural and campus spaces
  • Corporate hosting for offices and executive teams in the Lake County corridor

Choosing a Service Style for the Room

Service style is a room decision as much as a menu decision.

  • Plated works when you have a seated guest count, a firm timeline and enough staff to fire courses cleanly. It gives you the tightest control over pacing.
  • Buffet moves a larger group through a meal with fewer servers, but it needs floor space for lines that do not cross the bar or the dance floor.
  • Chef stations keep guests circulating and give a room energy, and they need power, attendant staffing and clear sightlines.
  • Family style suits long-table dinners and reads generously without the pacing pressure of full plated service.
  • Cocktail reception with passed hors d'oeuvres or a grazing display fits shorter events and rooms with limited seating.

We will tell you when a style will fight the space. A 200-guest chef station plan in a room with one service door is a staffing problem, not a menu problem.

Logistics, Venue Access and Rentals

Every Lake Forest proposal we build starts with the same questions:

  • Access: Where does the truck park, how far is the push to the kitchen or staging area, and are there stairs, elevators or timed loading restrictions?
  • Kitchen reality: Is there a working kitchen, a warming pantry, a servery or nothing at all? Nothing at all is workable. It simply changes the equipment list.
  • Power and water: Chef stations, coffee service and warming equipment all draw power. Outdoor sites frequently need a generator plan.
  • Rentals: Per-guest catering figures typically cover service ware and linens but not tables and chairs. Tenting, dance floors, lounge furniture, china upgrades and bar glassware are separate line items can be coordinated with the proposal, subject to the confirmed scope, so the host can see the vendor plan clearly.
  • Insurance and vendor paperwork: Many North Shore venues require a certificate of insurance and a signed vendor agreement before load-in day.
  • Transit timing: Lake Forest has two Metra stations, the Union Pacific North stop at 691 N. Western Ave and the Milwaukee District North stop at 911 Telegraph Rd. If guests arrive by train, we build the cocktail hour around the arrival window.

Weather and Seasonality on the North Shore

Lake Forest's event calendar is front-loaded into late spring and early fall, and lakefront weather does not respect a timeline.

  • May through June: graduation and wedding season overlap. Popular rooms and tent inventory book early.
  • July and August: outdoor hosting peaks. Heat management matters, which means shaded staging, chilled displays that hold, and a backup plan on file. Local summer calendar events such as Lake Forest Day draw crowds and can affect street access and parking, so confirm road closures for any date near a community event.
  • September and October: the strongest weather window of the year for tented dinners, plus High Holiday hosting. Ask about our holiday menus separately.
  • November through March: indoor hosting, corporate and family gatherings, and winter weather contingency planning built into the load-in schedule.

Every outdoor Lake Forest event gets a written weather contingency in the proposal. Not a verbal reassurance.

Lake Forest Catering FAQs

Do you travel to Lake Forest from Morton Grove?

Catering by Michaels operates from 6203 Park Ave, Morton Grove, IL 60053. Confirm current Lake Forest availability, travel terms and the requested service model when you inquire.

Can you cater a Lake Forest venue that has no kitchen?

A room without a working kitchen may still be possible. Confirm access, power and staging conditions so the proposal can define the required equipment and staffing.

Will the venue let you in?

That depends on the venue, and it is the first thing to check. Some Lake Forest properties allow outside caterers, some maintain an approved list, and some cater in-house only. Ask your venue directly for their current catering policy, insurance requirements and load-in windows, then send them to us so we can build to their rules.

How many staff will you bring for a Lake Forest wedding?

Staffing is set by guest count, service style and the room's layout. Plated service in a space with a long push from the staging area needs more hands than a grazing reception in an open hall. Your proposal will list the culinary and service roles included.

Can you handle a Lake Forest event at a private home?

Private residence events are part of what our full-service model is built for. Planning shifts to driveway and street parking, staging out of guest sightlines, power load, and where dish return and trash staging live.

Do you offer both full-service catering and delivery in Lake Forest?

The published full-service model includes culinary and wait staff, service ware and linens. Delivery is a different scope. Ask which model is available and appropriate for your Lake Forest event.
